ATLANTA — Under a memorandum of understanding signed with the Atlanta Center for International Arbitration and Mediation, the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC) will have access to hearing space and administrative services in the burgeoning southeastern United States. In addition, the two institutions intend to provide joint trainings and programming, share promotional efforts and refer parties in need of dispute resolution services to one another.
The Atlanta Center is an affiliate of Georgia State University College of Law, and its dedicated hearing facilities are located in the college’s new building in downtown Atlanta. It opened its doors with an inaugural conference co-hosted by the Atlanta International Arbitration Society on Sept. 30. The MOU with VIAC is the sixth one announced by the center and the second with a European partner.
VIAC has been administering arbitrations arising from economic disputes in Central Europe and world-wide for 40 years, since it was established by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. In recent years, VIAC’s visibility and reputation have been on the rise, and a relationship with Atlanta Center will extend its reach into the Western hemisphere. Persons booking hearing facilities at the Atlanta Center through VIAC will receive a 40 percent discount off standard rates.
“The memorandum of understanding with the Atlanta Center for International Arbitration and Mediation will further the Vienna International Arbitral Centre’s reach in the world of international arbitration, and the traditional role the Vienna International Arbitral Center has played as a neutral institution for East-West disputes,” said Manfred Heider, VIAC’s secretary general. “I look forward to strengthening ties with North America through this affiliation with the new arbitration center in Atlanta.”
Magaly Cobian, the Atlanta Center’s managing director, stated, “We are pleased that the highly reputable arbitral center in Vienna has agreed to partner with us. I am delighted to provide an Atlanta home to them. Atlanta is broadly recognized as the ‘capital’ of the Southeast, a region with a $3.3 trillion per year economy and is increasingly recognized as an international city. Atlanta is one of the world’s most accessible cities boasting the world’s busiest passenger airport and is famed for its hospitality. We look forward to extending a warm welcome to VIAC and its clients.”
The Atlanta Center for International Arbitration and Mediation is located within Georgia State University College of Law, at 85 Park Place NE, Atlanta, GA 30303.
